Last week, Jake and I were talking about the mindsets videographers bring to the job.

There’s so much talk in our industry about “charging your worth”,

Or “breaking into the luxury market”.

But in all of that, we often skip over the most basic truth:

At our core, we’re videographers who are hired to capture an event. Whether it’s a wedding, birthday party, grand opening, etc.

In simple terms, our job is to show up and record everything that happens.

And we’ve been guilty of telling filmmakers what they should or shouldn’t film

Like the hanging dress shot, flatlays, or family photos.

The truth is that you should film it all, if possible.

It might not make it in the final edit, but that doesn’t mean it’s not valuable.

We need to move past the “I’m too good to film this” mindset.

As much as we might not want to hear it, videographers often rank lower on the priority list.

Planners, rentals, photographers, florals, design, and even entertainment often come before us.

(We wish it weren’t true, but it is.)

So who are we to decide what gets captured and what doesn’t?
