Don't Let Your Business Suffer Because of Your Ego

Why you might be needlessly outpricing yourself. And suffering because of it.

(2-minute read)

I recently heard a story from Tony Robbins that hit me like a truck.

And maybe it resonated so much because I had just lost a bid to a potential client—one I priced way too high.

The story goes like this:

When Tony was a kid, his family was struggling, and on one Thanksgiving, a stranger showed up at their door with a frozen turkey.

His dad, instead of being grateful, got angry. He tried to slam the door.

The stranger put his foot in the door and said:

“Don’t let your family suffer because of your ego.”

In Tony’s words, his dad was fuming, but he reluctantly accepted the turkey for his family. That moment stuck with Tony forever.

And if I’m being honest, it hit home for me too.

We hear the same advice all the time—“Raise your prices!” “Charge your worth!” “Stop working with cheap clients!” And yeah, pricing yourself correctly is important. But sometimes, we let ego creep in.

I’ve been guilty of it myself.

A recent message I got from a client

Too many creatives focus so much on maximizing their hourly rate that they miss out on sustainable income. How often are we presented with an opportunity for predictable monthly revenue, but because it falls slightly below our day rate, we turn it down?

Even worse, we go to Facebook threads to bash the client.

Here’s the truth: pricing isn’t just about what we think we’re worth—it’s about understanding the market, the value we bring, and what actually makes sense.

That’s why strategic pricing matter. Not just slapping a big number on a service, but actually calculating a pricing structure that leads to sustainable income.

If you’ve ever struggled with pricing (or wondered if you’re charging too much or too little), we put together something to help.
